Aupair Visa Belgium - Au Pair Program in Belgium

Nationals of all countries (except the States of the European Union, Iceland, Monaco, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland) who want to stay more than three months in Belgium are subject to the visa/work permit requirement.

Non EU members who want to work as an au pair in Belgium must be in possession of:

  • a passport valid for at least one year
  • a recent certificate of good conduct covering the last five years
  • a medical certificate obtained from a doctor approved by the Embassy
  • an employment authorization, which must be requested by the Belgium host family and issued along with the work permit B.
  • The application must be submitted in time to allow for a possible investigation by the Foreign Office.

General Conditions for the Au Pair

  • The au pair must be between the ages of 18-25, and receive a work permit before turning 26.
  • Au pair must agree not to have another job in Belgium during the au pair year;
  • Au pair must prove that he has attended school up to the age of 17;
  • Au pair must have a basic knowledge of the language of the host family or enroll in intensive language classes after arriving in Belgium;
  • Au pair must provide a quarterly perfect attendance certificate for languages courses;
  • Au pair cannot have previously received a work permit in Belgium.

General Conditions for the Host Family

  • Host family must provide a single room to the au pair and ensure free access to the home;
  • Host family must provide insurance covering risks related to medical, pharmaceutical and hospitalization in case of au pair illness or accident;
  • Au pair must have at least one full day of rest per week and the opportunity to practice their religious or philosophical views;
  • Pay at least € 450 per month;
  • Au pair duties cannot exceed 4 hours/day and 20 hours/week.
  • Childcare duties cannot be the main purpose of au pairs stay in Belgium.Have at least one child who is under the age of 13 at the beginning of the aupair stay;
  • Provide day care for any children under the age of six.
  • Produce a certificate of good conduct for all family members, early in au pair's stay;
  • Provide insurance for the early repatriation of any au pair due to illness or accident, and cover any costs that arise from repatriation;
  • Apply for employment authorization and a work permit B prior to hosting an au pair.
  • Declare themselves willing to allow access to housing officials responsible for monitoring.

In case of non-compliance with these conditions, the au pair is assumed to be bound in a contract of employment domestic worker vis-à-vis the host family. Domestic workers are paid much higher rates than au pairs and are allowed to work longer hours.

Employment authorization and work permit B

The granting of employment authorization and work permit is subject to the following conditions:

  • Compliance with requirements that the au pair and the host family must comply;
  • The host family has no occupation permit, valid, on another au pair;
  • employment authorization and work permit may not exceed one year;
  • The employment authorization and work can be renewed only once and will not exceed one year;
  • A change of host family is only possible within the one year period.
